MFL Mentoring
2015-present, bespoke project for Welsh Government
MFL Mentoring has played the greatest role in the shaping of Pobl Communications. Funded by Welsh Government since 2015, MFL Mentoring has worked with five Welsh universities, over 130 secondary schools across Wales, trained over 400 university students and worked with over 10,000 secondary school learners. MFL Mentoring is our largest bespoke project and the foundation of our evidence base, with some seven years of research behind it.
MFL Mentoring represents just one of the ways we can work with organisations to deliver whole-scale solutions to intercultural and global communication challenges.
Language Horizons
2018-2020, bespoke project for Department for Education, England
The success of MFL Mentoring led to the development of a sister project, Language Horizons. This project was delivered 2018 to 2020 and was aimed at schools in England. Language Horizons secured funding from the Department for Education, England, to partner with four Universities: The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, The University of Warwick, and Coventry University. The project saw huge success in its two years with over 50% of mentees opting to take languages at GCSE.
Language Horizons is another example of a bespoke project designed, delivered and evaluated for a specific context.
Castilla y León
2018-2020, bespoke project for Cardiff University, School of Modern Languages, and the Junta de Castilla y León
From 2018 to 2020, MFL Mentoring partnered with the regional government of Castilla y León to deliver online and face-to-face mentoring with primary and secondary school learners in Valladolid, Spain. Mentors from Wales supported learners to consider a bilingual Spanish-English education pathway. The project was a collaboration with students engaged in a final year undergraduate module on teaching and learning at Cardiff University.
This project is another example of a bespoke project with an emphasis on integration into accredited university courses.
Physics Mentoring
Our approaches also work to support other disciplines
MFL Mentoring methodologies and approaches helped to establish Physics Mentoring in 2018. Physics Mentoring works with learners, aged 13-16, to increase the profile and uptake of physics at A-level, particularly among young women. The success of Physics Mentoring demonstrates how effective a mentoring approach, focused on motivation and inspiration rather than attainment, is across different disciplines and age groups.
This project was supported via our consultancy services, benefitting from strategic support and advice on mentoring methodologies and practices.
